Behaviour Support

Get strategies and supports that help you breakthrough the barriers caused by behaviour, and to create the life YOU want.

We understand that behaviours of concern are part of the picture, but they’re not the whole story.

At HYPE*, we don’t just manage behaviour – we seek to understand it.

We focus on uncovering the why behind behaviour, so we can create strategies that reduce distress, build meaningful skills, and support individuals to meet their needs in safer, more empowering ways.

Understanding behaviours of concern and Behaviour Support

Behaviours of concern are actions that can negatively impact a person’s wellbeing or quality of life. They might:

  • Limit where someone can go or what they can do
  • Cause physical harm to themselves or others
  • Create psychological distress
  • Affect learning, relationships, and participation in everyday life

But here’s the thing: behaviour is complex. It’s not always intentional. Sometimes it’s a way of communicating, other times not. And sometimes, the same behaviour can have more than one meaning.

At its core, behaviour support is a proactive, person-centred approach that seeks to understand why behaviours occur.

From here, we build a plan that includes:

  • Proactive Strategies – What can we change in the environment, routines, or supports to reduce the chances of the behaviour happening in the first place?
  • Response Strategies – How do we support the person (and those around them) in the moment, in a way that’s safe, respectful, and calm?
  • Skill Building – What can we teach the person that helps them get their needs met in ways that work better for them?

This plan is designed to support both the individual and the people around them – families, educators, support workers – so everyone feels confident, connected, and equipped.

Our approach to Behaviour Support

At HYPE*, Behaviour Support is about more than just managing behaviour – it’s about understanding it. We know that sometimes behaviour can be complex, and when we assume meaning, we can risk misinterpreting it. Therefore, we don’t assume. We explore with curiosity.

We look at the whole picture, asking:

  • What’s happening in the environment?
  • Are there unmet needs?
  • Could sensory processing, apraxia, or motor planning challenges be involved?
  • Are there underlying medical conditions?
  • What emotional factors might be at play?
  • Most importantly – what can we change or teach to help this person feel safe, understood, and supported?

All our Behaviour Support services are overseen by our Clinical Director (and HYPE* co-founder!), Ellie Brink.

Ellie holds a Masters in Applied Behaviour Analysis, is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst, and Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner, bringing deep expertise in behaviour support and a passion for neurodiversity-affirming practice.
